we're watching the fallout from a fiery wreck in daytona beach, florida. the crash on the last lap of the race sent debris flying into the stands. 28 spectators were injured. want to bring in joe carter live from daytona. joe, any update. are you hearing how the injured fans are doing? >> yes, good morning to you, susan. yes, cnn can confirm that as of 5:30 this morning there were four patients remaining at the halifax medical center the location in daytona beach and three of those four patients do remain in the intensive care unit. one of those icu patients is a male minor. now yesterday joey the speedway president did confirm that 28 people, 28 spectators were hospitalized and 14 were treated at the track hospital and 14 were taken off site to local hospitals. to recap what happened yesterday. this was the final lap of the race, it was a clumatic moment in the race. cars going around 200 inches per hour just inches from each other. regan smith was leading the race and tried to do a blocking maneuver and the two bumped bumpers and that sent kyle larsen's car into the stands and hi

after a terrifying crash that daytona international speedway. it happened just as race cars were approaching the checkered flag. one car went airborne and debris flew into the stands. adriana diaz talked to fans who saw it happen. >> a multicar crash on the last lap of the nascar nationwide series race in florida sent debris into the stands, injuring fans. >> terrible crash. >> rookie, kyle larson's number 32 car flew into a fence that separates the track from the stands. the force of the crash sheered off the front of his car and the engine landed in the divide. a tire and other pieces of the car came to rest in the grand stands of the daytona international speedway. >> you have to realize a motor was sitting in the stands and a wheel. i don't mean a tire, a wheel flying over your head. >> rescue crews moved in to help dozens of injured fans. terri says a piece of metal ripped apart his brother's leg. >> i didn't realize he got hurt as bad until i seen him laying over and his leg was bleeding pretty bad. >> larson walked away from the crash. veteran, tony stewart won the

an early morning shooting. >>> and trouble in daytona 500. we hear from a fan so close to the wreckage, he took home a piece of debris. good evening, everyone. i'm jim rose senfield. the crash comes before the biggest day of the event, the daytona 500. no fans were killed in the wreck but more than 30 were injured and one racing fan from maryland got an up-close look at all of them. darcy spoke to him. darcy? >> he says this was the first time though it won't be his last. he'll be back there tomorrow for the daytona 500. these photos were taken following a crinternational spe. he was about 50 yards away from where a car flew into the fence and sent debris everywhere. >> i smelled smoke, tires, next something pop out of the fence and it was one of those deals where you touched your head. >> the crash injured at least 33 nascar fans watching the nationwide series race. a tire and large pieces of the damaged car made it through or over a fence that's there to protect spectators. nascar officials say despite the damage, the daytona 500 will go on. >> we transported 14 people off the property a

to begin this morning with the that terrifying crash at daytona international speedway. abc's matt gutman joins us now from the scene. good morning to you, matt. >> reporter: good morning, bianna, nearly 200,000 people were on hand to watch that near-physics-defieing crash. launch into air. disintegrated as it hit that fence. 28 people hurt, including a child. all of them this morning are in stable condition. this morning, fans and drivers, alike, recovering from near-death at nascar. >> stuff was flying everywhere, like you were in a war zone. >> reporter: this massive shotgun of debris, came after this tangle of cars on the last lap. >> and contact! >> reporter: watch these cars heading toward the finish line, where kyle larson's number 32 is launched airborne. >> the front of the car was gone. >> reporter: this video shot by a fan, you can see chunks of the car into the stands. this 25-pound car tire plunged ten rows into the packed stands. nearby, he rushed to the aid of his brother eddie. >> i grabbed my belt and tied it around the leg. that seemed to help. >> reporter: rescuers came

for watching. have a great week. >>> this is a fox news alert a. wild and chaotic day at the daytona international speedway after two crashes during the nationwide race, including this one. on the final lap moments before the end of the race, cellularson's car sailing into the fence that separates the track from the grand stands. he managed to escape from his car afterwards, but his accident set off a chain reaction with reports of at least ten cars crashing into each other. large chunk attention of debris flew into the stands, injuring fans. but we don't know how many were injured. emergency workers are being stretchers into the crowd to care for the injured. shortly before that crash, there was another accident involving 13 cars. this one happening with five laps remaining in the race. tony stewart won the race by maneuvering around the wreckage but did not celebrate afterwards. we'll bring you more details on this crash coming up later in this show. >> and we're glad you're with us. welcome to another brand-new hour inside america's news headquarters. i'm rick folbaum. >> i'm arth
